Feedback That Counts

It’s impossible to imagine any sports coach not giving focused, real-time feedback, precisely the kind that is so missing in many organisations. What coach would come to a player at the end of a season and say: “You know, if you had just done A, B and C, not only would you have won that match four months ago, but you would have very likely gone on to win the tournament and the title.”

It’s laughable, and yet that’s precisely what so many managers are doing when they think that feedback is something that only needs to happen once a year during an annual review, and even then, only superficially.

Good managers, like good coaches, are on the side of their players and want to see them succeed. And they know that success is much more difficult to achieve without constant feedback to help them grow.
